We start every year with a meeting, and in this meeting we ask a lot of questions. What’s going on in your life? What are you thinking about? What are you hoping to achieve in the coming year? We have our agenda, but you always come first.

The first-quarter meeting is where we set the stage for the coming year by working through our alignment model and discussing your values, goals, and the actions you’re taking to move your financial life forward. It also includes scenario planning and net worth review while ensuring alignment with your values-driven financial plan.

An important deliverable that is derived from the first-quarter meeting is an updated One Page Financial Plan. This executive summary of your financial life for the coming year includes cashflow projections and scenario analyses. You’ll always leave this meeting with a prioritized action list that will be our guide for the rest of the year.

Our focus in Q2 is on your full investment portfolio and asset allocation. We look at your entire financial picture to assure that all of your assets are properly aligned from a risk and performance standpoint. From your cash accounts, to 401(k)’s, to private investments and real estate, our comprehensive review includes everything you own.

Our Investment Review Committee also provides a thorough review of all assets you have invested with Master’s and provides a blueprint to align your assets held outside of Master’s with our asset allocation recommendations.

Risk is unique to every family’s personal situation. In Q3, we review those unique risks and discuss mitigation strategies to give you peace of mind in case the what-if’s of life happen.

Our first focus is on your liquidity position and insurance portfolio. Our approach finds the most efficient way to protect your family in case of an unexpected event.

Second, we review your legal documents and model the flow of your estate, so you can see, in real dollars, what your plan spells out. We also look for updates that need to be made or efficiencies that can be implemented to minimize tax and maximize the assets that go to your family and preferred charitable organizations.

As the year is winding down, we will take stock of where you stand on all of the action items in your plan and make any necessary adjustments before year end.

We also run a full tax projection to model out your tax scenario for the year, look for ways to optimize your tax situation and get ahead of any potential surprises at tax time. This is all done in close coordination with your tax professional to assure planning continuity.

Lastly, we review your giving goals for the year and in concert with your tax projection, assess any giving opportunities that align with your goals and help your tax situation. You give to give, not to save tax, but if you want to give, we look for the best way to leverage your giving to improve your lifetime tax bill.
